An
indoorsy trip to Door county. It was Amy’s birthday and we grabbed a room
at the Whistling Swann. We were newly
engaged and the constant rain and cool weather couldn’t keep our smiles
away. Amy knew the proprietor of the bed
and breakfast and Craig’s book was in the lobby. Bood smells and familiar scenes. We had the bikes on the Subaru with plans of
riding through the state park but the rain kept us at bay. We ate well, choosing the Whistling Swann the
first night and then lucked into an Oktoberfest Feast on Saturday night with
Loads of sausage and kraut. Saturday we
drove to the tip of the Door, Gills Rock, and the colors of the maples were at
peak yellow and orange. The rain added
to the view creating the perfect light.
The final stretch is a curvy, winding road designed to slow you down and
enjoy the view. It is a good design. We bought smoked fish and struggled to find a
place to eat it. We spent the rest of
the day shopping and looking for rings for me in Fish Creek and few other towns
on the peninsula.
